The Whimsical Cakery By Leanne Kelly
The Whimsical Cakery is owned by myself, Leanne Kelly and was established in 2015, shortly after my own wedding to my husband Ian. I have always enjoyed making sugar flowers and knew from the beginning of my wedding planning that I would be making our own wedding cake. Having run a cake decorating business previously, I decided to pursue my dream and to do what I have always loved the most – making beautifully romantic wedding cakes…
With so much inspiration out there, people often come to me with ideas. It is great to be able to provide a personalised design. Whether that be recreating the flowers in a bridal bouquet in sugar form, or the addition of something unique, for example something that was included on the wedding invitation design. As well as making wedding cakes, I also provide couples with dessert tables filled with goodies such as macarons and meringues, mini cakes, cupcakes and cookie favours.
Cake trends – When it comes to rustic buttercream, “naked”, or “semi-naked”cakes, they are still popular for weddings. I have noticed some changes however….”watercolour” is a technique that I am coming across a lot this season. This is where a cake is covered in different buttercream colours that are smoothed and blended around a cake to give an artistic watercolour effect. Drip cakes are hugely popular and can be decorated with macarons and treats or decorated with sugar flowers or fresh flowers. Golden drip cakes, where the drip is painted with metallic gold to give an indulgent look.
When it comes to fondant cakes – couples are noticing and loving the sharp clean edges and deep tiers trend. I am often told that was one of the things that attracts people to my work. The chalkboard design is popular, as are fondant ruffles and pleats. Sugar flowers are ever popular as brides request realistic looking flowers on their cakes, and the flower wreath is a new trend that seems to feature lots on wedding cakes right now. Metallics – edible gold and silver leaf, geometric designs and texture are all popular and work well alongside sugar flowers to give a mix of contemporary and traditional which works well together. Hand painted details, such as roses or lettering.
